How to be fit (for busy people)
I get it, fitness isn’t your top priority. You have a career, a family, a social life, and 1000s of other things you’d instead do than put yourself through the “suffering” of getting fit.
Unfortunately, the marketing around fitness has led you to believe that everything is healthy, everything isn’t healthy, and exercise equals suffering.
None of which is true.
I’m very career-driven. If I’m not working during the day, then I’m probably working on something during the evening. Where does that leave time to invest in my fitness? I’ll show you.
Firstly, I want to nip the “it’s easy for you to say” objection in the bud. The only person who decides how you spend your life is you. There are no excuses, but at the same time, it is totally fine if you don’t want to invest in your fitness. I’m only writing to the people who want to win daily battles with their body and mind.
1. Make fitness part of your daily routine
Humans are creatures of habit. Just think about driving. When you first started, going from 0 to 1 mph took all your mental effort. Now, because you do it every day, you often forget how you got from point A to B because it is now second nature.
My point is, starting anything is difficult and requires you to completely change your perception of yourself. Fitness is no different.
However, incorporating it into your daily routine will have a huge upside.
For the gym part of fitness, I find it easiest to go as soon as I wake up and before work during the week. I don’t give myself time to think about whether or not I “want” to go, because it is just what I do now. Even if I have a lazy morning and sleep in (like I did on the morning of writing this), something is better than nothing.
If you’re not a morning person, going straight after work can be great, too. The essence remains the same – make fitness part of your routine and it will be so much easier than motivating yourself to choose some struggle over sitting on the couch.
2. Educate yourself/ get help
The fitness industry is worth $96.7 billion.).
A by-product of that is A LOT of people trying to market their way into your pockets and take your money – promising results for s*** advice.
If you followed every bit of fitness advice you heard on the internet, you’d be a carnivore-vegan who wakes up at 5 am to sit in an ice bath all day.
General fitness advice rarely works. What does work can only be found by one person. You. By experimenting with different workout methods, diets, etc, you’ll gain a better understanding of what works for you. You are the most important person in your life after all.
No fitness influencer, fitness company, or fitness-related newsletter can know exactly what works for you. That’s your job.
You can always employ a coach to support you and keep you accountable towards figuring out what works best for you. But you don’t know the result of anything until you try it.
3. Analyse how you spend your hours
We all have the same 24 hours every day. How you spend those 24 hours determines everything that will ever happen in your life.
It’s your job to spend them wisely. Investing time in yourself every day offers a better return on investment than any extra hours at work (or hours mindlessly scrolling through your phone) ever will. I promise.
After analysing how you spend your hours for just one week, you could realise that you’re spending too much time on things that don’t serve you, your family, or your long-term vision. That’s not ideal.
Again, only when you take a step back and analyse, will you truly know where to focus on improving. It’s all about taking one tiny step at a time.
